During summer the long shadows and dappled shade cast by the
many giant tree specimens give welcome relief from the hot sun. A picnic by the
lake is particularly pleasant but you may have to share with the many ducks and
geese who live around Marshal’s lake.
At dusk escorted walks are organised for visitors to see and
hear owls, nightjars, foxes, rabbits and smell the wonderful aromas of the
conifers. There are ferns, heathers and drifts of wildflowers such as orchid and
scabious and Marshal’s lake is festooned with lillies. The banks of the many
streams provide a home for huge skunk cabbages and nineteen different species of
dragonfly.
The heather at Bedgebury Pinetum is in full bloom at this time
of year, providing a carpet of warm mauve colour across the valleys. The
grasslands and meadow flowers are also showing off their blooms to attract bees,
butterflies and dragonflies, which can all be found in abundance at this time of
year, making the Pinetum a truly spectacular and tranquil place to visit and
enjoy. Picnic tables are sited by the
picturesque Marshal’s Lake.
