Bedgebury National Pinetum

National Pinetum & Forest Gardens

Autumn brings superb leaf colours - a dazzling display of reds, oranges and yellows between the various shades of green. Tints are plentiful due to recently planted groups of trees and shrubs noted for their autumn splendour.

The season is one of the busiest times of the year for behind the scenes preparation. Planting, pruning and planning. October is the month when plants are pruned to give greater impact, the landscape of lakes and valleys is photographed and changes planned.

Creating and maintaining this ever-changing scene takes very careful planning. It’s prepared much like a jigsaw, everything has to fit and be in exactly the right place. A tree will be moved if its shape, colour or size are wrong for the setting.

It’s also a good time for birdlife. Autumn sees the Crossbill and Hawfinch in abundance. They can be seen enjoying the fruit, berries, fir and pine cones that Autumn brings to Bedgebury.
