Catkins

February is a month of contrasts, with hints of spring interspersed with bitter winter weather.  It is a month for catkins and the first of the spring flowers - snowdrops and early primroses. If you can find a sunny day with no wind it is the best time in the year.

If the weather is good in February, we can see the spring flowers in bloom - snowdrops, daffodils and primroses - if not only the former will be flowering. It is also a month for catkins particularly on hazels and willows.

The first of our larches will start to bud at the end of the month - Larix gmelinii from Siberia, not suprisingly, is the first.
